Let the Games Begin! Jess and Rory are a thing now. Rory and Lorelai visit Yale with the grandparents, which brings about some drama.
SPOILER ALERT. I have seen all the seasons before, so I am reviewing with future events in mind. SPOILER ALERT.
Lorelai: I’m just hoping for the best at this point.
Luke: Very romantic.
Lorelai: Say’s the guy who yelled ‘Finally’ at the end of Love Story.
When did they watch Love Story together? What was the context? I need to know.
The Gilmores go to Yale!
Richard sang at an acapella group in university! That is amazing.
I don’t understand why Rory seems so weirded out about visiting Yale. Is it just because her mother has a thing against Yale? And, besides the fact that her dad went there, which is a stupid reason, why does Lorelai dislike Yale so much? It is all very confusing to me.
And there they are, walking around Yale. Richard used to take women to the art gallery! I can totally see him doing that.
Emily calling Richard out on his early-day shenanigans. I love it.
But then, okay. Richard should have asked Rory about that interview. At least, as she points out, so she could prepare. And, I mean, even if Lorelai’s feelings are somewhat unfounded and ridiculous, he knows they’re there, so a heads-up and/or a conversation about it would have been nice. Springing this on the three Gilmore girls was a terrible decision, especially because a meeting with a Dean is important and of course Rory would have liked to be prepared. But like, why does Lorelai always make a scene? It makes me mad. And, does she really think Rory is applying to only one school? Does she even know how university applications work? Also, newsflash, applying does not equal attending. She is making such a big deal out of one dumb meeting.
The way he went about it was wrong, but Emily is right. It is not about Lor, his intentions were good, Rory will go wherever she wants to in the end. And she does. She goes to Yale.
Rory and Jess: The early years
They are so cute and awkward around each other here. It makes me so warm and fuzzy inside. Even if it ends up being a mess. This part is lovely.
Luke: Hanging socks on doors, that’s your idea of funny?
Jess: Depending on the sock design, it could be hilarious.
Here’s another thing. When Jess was with Shane, Luke didn’t lay any ground rules. He had the world’s shortest conversation with Jess about the time she was hiding in a closet. I know he cares about Rory, but that says a lot about Luke’s respect for Shane. Who cares what he does to Shane, right? Not to say that he should have been equally terrifying about ridiculous ground rules, but it rubs me the wrong way. Why does he act like Rory has no agency, no desire or voice of her own? Why does Luke act like Jess is something that is going to happen to Rory?
LOL. He looks so pleased with himself after the world’s most useless and ineffective “sex talk” in history. Oh, Luke.
I am glad Rory called out what Lorelai said about “Jess taking off her bracelet for her”. I am glad she is going to try to be supportive.
And they kiss! I only bring it up because I think Alexis Bledel was the bad on-screen kisser. Her kisses with Dean were unsettling. This kiss with Jess is better but it still looks awkward. Maybe practice makes perfect? I will have to see in future episodes and seasons.
I kind of agree with Dean here, what is happening to me?
Rory climbs a tree and goes to Dean’s window and starts talking about how sad it’s gonna be when Dean’s mom and sister hate her. This is a common thing people do, by the way: start an apology by talking about their own feelings and making it about them. Please don’t?
He does do the hurt face really well, and the teary eyes too. He was a shitty boyfriend, but he did love her.
The episode ends with both Gilmore girls separately looking at the Yale pamphlet.
