I don’t recall being super into this one. I remember a certain loveable crime lord comes back, but that’s it. I love this particular crime lord a lot though, so I’m sure it’s worth it.
I have watched the whole show before, so SPOILERS MIGHT HAPPEN. Big spoilers will be blanked out but references and irrelevant spoilers are going to be out in the open.
The number is that of Riley Cavanaugh, an irish mob enforcer who we (and Harold) assume has to be the perpetrator since, well, mob.
Riley’s boss asks him to take out a deceased mob guy’s widow because she is being too loud about his boss’ part in his death, or something. But plot twist! This woman is now dating Riley. And the boss knows. So the boss orders another mob guy to kill them both. What a mess.
John asks Harold if he feels comfortable looking after Annie (the woman dating Riley), since he is still spooked about leaving the library. He decides to push through it, and he even turns down Bear’s help (Bear was ready to go out and protect his friend! Such cuteness!).
John helps Riley and Annie out of a tight spot, but not without getting shot (in his vest, it’s fine) first. That’s the thing with many of the numbers: they have no way of knowing John is trying to help, so they might think he is also trying to kill them. Oh well, an occupational hazard, I suppose.
The irish mob boss puts a 1M bounty on Annie and Riley, open to any takers. They need help. Who you gonna call? Carl motherfucking Elias! Hells yes, he’s back.
They are finally meeting face-to-face, how beautiful is that? Maybe you don’t see it and that’s okay. Not everyone can appreciate a blossoming beautiful thing when it’s in front of them.
They have such an interesting chemistry, Elias and Harold. They’re both the secretive, behind-the-scenes types, both very professor-like, smart and cautious and in control. Harold asks Elias to forbid his men from hunting Annie and Riley, as a favor to Harold and John. But does Elias look like the kind of guy to give favors just like that? Well, no. So what’s his price?
A chess partner! He just wants someone to play chess with (although I resent him implying there is no one as smart or chess-worthy in prison as he is)!
Your fave mob lord would never.
The mob bros still catch up to Annie, so now John is helping Riley steer clear of cops so they can save her.
Harold is not convinced, since Riley is a hitman. He has sort of a point.
Harold: He’s just… bad code.
Eeeesh imagine all the feelings, borrowing vocabulary and ideology from your kidnapper. Harry later clarifies that the term doesn’t apply to humans, because humans can change. Even killers. Even Root herself, as we come to discover.
So anyway, Riley and John get Annie out, but Riley gets shot multiple times and dies. Is this the first time they lose a number in the show? I think so.
The episode ends with Annie leaving NYC, and Elias collecting on Harold’s end of things: a game of chess.
